Will the Volcano spoil our world cup?
With various doomsayers foretelling a dark cloud over the world cup, we asked weather expert and soccer fanatic Derek van Dam for his opinion.
"This eruption is not an uncommon occurrence" he assured us. "It's just that the steering winds are driving the volcanic ash into a high traffic area with regards to aviation. If it were to continue for the next few weeks, it could have an impact, but we can't turn rumors into fact."
According to Derek van Dam, the volcanic ash, at this point, is not a serious cause for concern in regards to the world Cup. Of course, if you're traveling in or out of Europe at this moment, you will definitely be affected, but it's too soon to predict any affect on travel further ahead.
"There are so many atmospheric processes between now and the world cup, I think it's far fetched to predict a worse case scenario at this stage. I'm sure we're going to have a great world cup and the fans will arrive in clear skies."
So if you're looking to place bets on the cloud, it's low odds from Derek's side.
