Teacher, Motivator, Humanitarian.
Best newcomer to television YOU magazine 2008.
Since dropping on to our television screens as a meteorologist with passion and a sense of humour, Derek Van Dam has revolutionized weather broadcasting and won the hearts of South Africans. He’s also trained university meteorology graduates in the latest technologies and graphics.
Derek graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Meteorology and Broadcasting from the Central Michigan University in 2005 and is a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist from the American Meteorological Society.
But meteorology is not his only passion in life. As a director on the board of Compassionate Life, a Christian based NGO working with Widows and Orphans affected by the HIV/AIDS pandemic in Swaziland, Derek’s other passion is philanthropy.
While employed as the on-air meteorologist in Detroit, the “Derek Goes to Africa” sweeps were the highest rated newscasts on the NBC affiliate. Each report focused on his humanitarian work in various parts of Africa.
With his popularity on the rise, there’s increasing demand for Derek Van Dam as an MC and speaker.
