David Newton’s one man comedy show rocked the Hilton Festival this year, with sold out shows in the main theatre and emergency aid for side splitting injuries.
His One-Man Show “Defending the Laid Man” earned him 2 Fleur Du Cap Theatre Award nominations. He followed with the equally hysterical and controversial one man show “Politically Incorrect.” This full-speed-ahead comedy rant through politically inappropriate territory earned him a nomination for the South African Comedy Award for “Best Stand-up Comedy of the Year 2007.”
His coup at this year’s Grahamstown festival firmly entrenched him as one of the young comics taking over in South Africa. Other comedy triumphs include the
International Comedy Festival 2006 (Danger Zone) and 2007 (Main Arena),
The Old Mutual Comedy Encounters in Cape Town 2009 and the SABC3 Comedy Showcase 2003.
David made his TV presenting debut on SABC3’s “Couch Trip” (Big Blue Productions, who also created Going Nowhere Slowly), which ran for two seasons in 2006. David followed this up by making it into the ‘Final 12’ of the Top Billing Presenter Search for 2006 and cameo appeared on the show in 2008.
“Newton walks on stage and re-writes the recipe for stand-up comedy…”
ArtSmart Durban.
“Genius lies in making us laugh at the taboo… He may just be one of our most
natural stand-ups”
Cape Times
“His last show, Defending the Laid Man, was one of the best feats of stand-up comedy I'd seen in years, but seeing Politically Incorrect left me laughed out. It is exquisitely funny.”
