On the 23rd  November 2007, Alex and his partner and fellow climber Sibusiso Vilane set out to conquer the South Pole in an unsupported walk from Hercules Inlet, on the edge of Antarctica, to the Geographic south pole, with 1 113 km ahead of them.  Braving temperatures ranging between – 8° and - 40° and menacing weather, each dragging a sled weighing 130kg, Alex and Sibusiso arrived at their destination 65 days later, on 17th January 2008 at 13h00 Chilean time, with huge smiles and a prayer of thanks to their Redeemer.

This was a momentous and historical feat but not the only adventure Alex Harris is famous for. In 1996, at the age of 25, he led an expedition to Mount Everest. He was the youngest Everest expedition leader on record. By 1998 he was the first South African to have climbed on all seven continents which pushed him on to conquering the elusive Seven Summits.

Alex has been climbing and mountaineering around the world since 1989 and is South Africa’s most experienced and respected high altitude mountaineer. His easy-going manner, leadership qualities and deep understanding of human potential has made him the first choice as expedition leader on some of the most significant South African mountaineering achievements. He has led more than 25 expeditions, which have taken him to all seven continents and the furthest corners of the world … from the jungles of Borneo, through the arid plains of Tibet, to the frozen wastelands of Antarctica. He finds in mountains a sense of purpose and destiny that give his life meaning and inspire those around him.
